Mitochondrial function declines with age, reducing the ability of skeletal and cardiac muscle to efficiently produce the energy needed for normal function. In the Marcinek Lab, Tsedenya Beruk is investigating how the activity of mitochondrial respiratory complexes and dehydrogenases changes during aging. She is measuring enzyme activity in muscle samples treated with or without Urolithin A, a compound that enhances mitochondrial quality. This research aims to better understand the mechanisms of age-related mitochondrial dysfunction and identify potential strategies to support healthy muscle and heart aging.
