Who We Are
The Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine represents more than 180 labs from 40 departments based in the schools of Medicine and Pharmacy and the College of Engineering. We are proud to be the largest multidisciplinary research institute at the University of Washington. Together, we are confronting the root causes of disease, innovating new technologies to solve major challenges in medicine, and expanding horizons for young scientists. And we are committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive workplace and an open exchange of ideas, cultures, perspectives, and laughter. This our community.
Fostering an Inclusive and Supportive Research Community
At ISCRM, we recognize that STEM fields, including biomedical research, are limited by a demonstrable and pervasive lack of diversity of perspectives and lived experiences. We know we are at our best as a research community when scientists representing different backgrounds, cultures, and worldviews work together to solve complex problems. To reach our full potential as scientists, ISCRM fosters an inclusive and supportive research community by investing in the careers of trainees and faculty members from all backgrounds, expanding awareness of career opportunities in research through K-12 and community engagement, and promoting an open exchange of ideas through symposia and community gatherings.

Like the cells we study, we are encoded for growth and we give rise to new generations. We take on individual roles, yet we are capable of organizing to accomplish complex tasks. And we have the capacity to be anything we want to be. We value community, discovery, and education in the service of wellbeing and we envision a future in which regenerative medicine is improving health for people everywhere.
Core ValuesCuriosity. Audacity. Invention.
We personify the Pacific Northwest spirit of exploration. We are a center of discovery linking a pioneering past to a future of profound possibilities. The will to go first and go far is encoded in our collective DNA. We embrace every opportunity to challenge ourselves and the status quo for a healthier world.
Diversity. Solidarity. Impact.
Collaboration is our culture, our way of life. Being part of something bigger than ourselves brings out the best in each of us. We are bound by our conviction that multiple perspectives are required to solve complex problems. We welcome new people and ideas. We are proud of our institute. And we celebrate our successes as a community.
Translation. Access. Healing
The global human toll of disease is unbearable and unsustainable. As scientists and clinicians, our goal is to stop symptoms at the point of origin. Our business is guiding cells and genes to treat patients at any stage of life in the most effective, efficient, and equitable way ever imagined. We discover so we can heal.
Mentorship. Growth. Lifelong Learning.
Science is a never-ending pursuit. It must be passed from generation to generation. We honor the legacy of the scientists who came before us by lifting up those who will inherit our field. We invest in a biomedical workforce that reflects the global populations they will heal. We share our love of discovery with people of all ages. And we never forget that we never stop learning.

Here are some of the ways we live our values through our actions and our investments in our community.

We are committed to service both within our institute and to the broader community. There are opportunities throughout the year for members of ISCRM labs to volunteer to help with a wide range of internal and external events and initiatives. This could include supporting an ISCRM symposium or celebration, providing experiences for high school students, or organizing an experience for members of the ISCRM community. Learn more here.
